    Steering Committee of the MDS Women in Movement Disorders Special Interest Group
       BACKGROUND: Despite increasing numbers of women practising neurosciences, gender disparities persist in academic authorship. Focused evaluation of authorship patterns within movement disorders remains limited.
    OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in women authorship across movement disorders publications in high-impact neurology journals and movement disorders-specific journals across a decade.
    METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of movement disorder-related articles published in 2014 and 2024 in 20 neurology journals with the highest impact factor and two flagship movement disorders journals related to the International Parkinson and Movement Disorders Society. Women authorship proportions were calculated overall and by article type. First-to-senior authorship representation ratios were examined, and associations with journal impact factors were explored.
    RESULTS: A total of 919 articles (9431 authors) were analyzed in 2024 and 755 articles (5801 authors) in 2014. Overall women authorship was 41.1% in 2024 compared with 38% in 2014 and senior (last) women authorship was 37% (2024) and 36% (2014). In 2024, women accounted for 43% of first and 31% of senior authors in Movement Disorders, compared with 41% and 27%, respectively, in 2014. A representation gap from first-to-senior authorship persisted across most journals. No clear association was observed between journal impact factor and women authorship.
    CONCLUSIONS: Over the past decade, women's representation in movement disorders publishing improved at first authorship levels but remained stagnant at low levels in senior authorship roles. Persistent lacuna between first and senior women authorship is an underexplored gap that may reflect a combination of structural barriers, cohort effects, and life-course factors. © 2026 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

       PURPOSE: To determine the publication rate of oral presentations from the CIRSE 2021 and 2022 congresses, assess time to publication and citation impact, and identify factors associated with successful full-text publication in PubMed/MEDLINE-indexed journals.
    METHODS: This cross-sectional bibliometric study analyzed all oral presentations from the CIRSE 2021 and 2022 Books of Abstracts. Publication searches were conducted using Google Scholar and PubMed/MEDLINE between February and March 2026. The primary endpoint was the publication rate. Secondary endpoints included time to publication, citation count, 5-year journal impact factor (JIF), and factors associated with publication.
    RESULTS: Of 254 oral abstracts, 158 (62.2%) were subsequently published as full-text articles indexed in PubMed/MEDLINE. Median time to publication was 13.0 months (IQR 5.0-24.0), and 93.0% were published within three years. The median citation count was 5.0 per article (IQR 2.0-11.0). The median 5-year JIF was 4.3 (IQR 2.7-5.5). Study design (p = 0.001) and collaboration type (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with publication outcome. Internationally collaborative studies had the highest publication rate (82.7%) and median citation count (9; IQR 3-23). Citation counts also differed significantly among study-design categories (p = 0.005), with the highest median observed in prospective studies.
    CONCLUSION: The publication conversion rate for CIRSE 2021-2022 oral abstracts was 62.2%, exceeding rates reported in several previous studies of radiology and interventional radiology congresses. International collaboration and prospective or experimental study designs were associated with higher publication rates.

       PURPOSE: Article processing charges (APCs) are central to author-paid open access (OA) publishing. Disparities appear in oncology, pathology, and global surgery, but not colorectal surgery, spanning coloproctology, general surgery, gastroenterology, and oncology journals. We examined APC levels, citation-impact linkage, and authorship geography.
    METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of 32 journals (MEDLINE/PubMed search). APCs (publisher-direct 2026) and 2024 citation metrics (Journal Impact Factor [JIF], SCImago Journal Rank [SJR], SCImago H-index) were extracted. First- and last-author countries for all 2024-2025 articles (n=31,164) were mapped to World Bank income groups. Multivariable ordinary least squares regression modeled log10(APC) on publisher group, region, OA model, and log10(JIF 2024).
    RESULTS: Median APC was US $3,980 (interquartile range, $3,580-$4,390), varying by region: $1,467 in Asia, $3,840 in the United Kingdom, $4,140 in Western Europe, and $4,175 in the United States. APC correlated with the SCImago H-index (ρ=0.51, P=0.003) but not with JIF (P=0.25) or SJR (P=0.13). Of 30,320 articles, first authors were from high-income countries in 62.5%, upper-middle-income countries in 34.7%, and lower-middle- or low-income countries in 2.8%; China (30.9%), the United States (23.1%), and Japan (8.0%) were the leading countries. First authors were more often from non-high-income countries than last authors (median difference, +0.68 percentage points; P<0.001). In multivariable regression (R2=0.90), society-direct publishing was associated with lower APCs (β=-0.44, P<0.001), whereas US-based publishing (β=+0.18, P=0.019), UK-based publishing (β=+0.16, P=0.037), and a hybrid OA model (β=+0.15, P=0.014) were associated with higher APCs. JIF was not independently associated with APC (P=0.93).
    CONCLUSION: Colorectal surgery APCs are high and decoupled from citation impact after adjustment, with underrepresentation of lower-resource-setting authors, especially at senior-author level. Society-owned and Asia-based journals offer lower-cost alternatives but remain a minority.

      Scientific production in dentistry has grown in Peru over the past decade; however, institutional differences in publication impact, thematic areas, and collaboration patterns remain unclear.
    AIM: To compare the Scopus-indexed dental scientific output of five Peruvian universities between 2013 and 2023.
    MATERIALS AND METHOD: A cross-sectional bibliometric study was conducted using Scopus to identify dental publications affiliated with the five most productive Peruvian universities from 2013 to 2023. Eligibility criteria included dental-related topics and full variable availability. After screening 825 records, 584 were included. Extracted variables included publication year, type, thematic area, citations, scientific productivity, number of authors, and collaboration patterns. Descriptive indicators were computed; normality was assessed using Shapiro-Wilk. Group differences were tested with Chisquare and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with Bonferroni-adjusted post hoc analyses. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05.
    RESULTS: The greatest increase in scientific output occurred between 2019 and 2023, peaking in 2021. Universidad Científica del Sur produced the highest number of publications (34.25%), while Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia obtained the highest citation impact. Public Oral Health was the most frequently represented area. Significant differences were found in thematic specialization (p=0.016), citation averages (p<0.001), number of authors (p=0.007), and collaboration types (p<0.001). National collaborations predominated, while international partnerships remained limited.
    CONCLUSIONS: Peruvian dental research indexed in Scopus has increased substantially in recent years. Citation impact and thematic specialization differ among universities, reflecting heterogeneous research development. The predominance of national collaboration highlights the need to reinforce international cooperative networks. These findings support the formulation of differentiated strategies to strengthen institutional research capacity and global visibility.

       Background: Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria (ANP) celebrated 80 years in 2023. We have previously evaluated the publication trends throughout the journal's first 40 years.
    Objective: To analyze the publication trends, authorship, and editorial patterns of the volumes 41 to 60 of ANP.
    Methods: We analyzed the volumes 41 to 60 of ANP (1983-2002). Data were tabulated independently by five blinded researchers and crossverified by two independent researchers.
    Results: From 1983 to 2002, 20 volumes, 91 issues and 2,424 articles were published. We analyzed 2,066 articles after excluding nonresearch papers (1,159 original articles and 770 case reports). Compared with the first 20 years, there was a significant increase in the total number of authors/article (3.96 vs. 2.73, p < 0.00001), a significant increase of female authors, from 11 to 28.6% (p < 0.05), and a decrease in the number of pages/article (p < 0.05). Lineu Cesar Werneck, Hélio Afonso Ghizoni Teive, and Milberto Scaff were the most prolific authors. Most of the articles focused on Neurology/Child Neurology subjects, with a progressive decreased percentage of Psychiatry papers and increase in Basic Research contributions. There was a linear increase in the total number of articles from 1983 to 2002 as detected by regression analysis (R2 = 0.9134; p < 0.0001) and an exponential increase from 1943 to 2002 (R2 = 0.9046; p < 0.0001). Most of the articles were written in Brazilian Portuguese, by authors from Southeastern Brazil (60.2%).
    Conclusion: The years 1983 to 2002 marked the transition to the current ANP format: minimal Psychiatry contributions; greater contribution from Southern Brazilian states; and, starting in 1999, greater acknowledgment of sponsorship from research agencies and postgraduate training.

       OBJECTIVE: To evaluate scholarly productivity before and after tenure among non-pharmacy practice (NPP) faculty in U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy and assess whether changes in scholarly productivity following tenure varied across faculty demographic and institutional characteristics.
    METHODS: This retrospective bibliometric analysis included tenured NPP faculty who achieved tenure between 2014 and 2023. Publication productivity was assessed using Web of Science records during the five years preceding tenure and the post-tenure period through December 31, 2024, excluding the tenure year. Publication counts were annualized to account for differences in post-tenure observation periods. Pre- and post-tenure productivity were compared overall, across faculty and institutional characteristics, and by publication type using Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank tests.
    RESULTS: A total of 234 tenured NPP faculty from 41 U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy were included. Mean annualized publication productivity increased from 3.5 ± 2.9 publications per faculty member per year before tenure to 4.5 ± 3.8 after tenure (median 3 vs. 3.4). Increases were observed across most faculty demographic and institutional characteristics examined. Original research articles accounted for the largest share of scholarly output and increased from a mean of 2.2 ± 1.8 to 3.3 ± 3.1 publications per faculty member per year (median 1.8 vs. 2.3).
    CONCLUSION: Publication productivity among NPP faculty in U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy increased following tenure, driven primarily by original research publications. These findings challenge concerns that publication productivity declines after tenure; however, the observational study design does not permit attribution of the observed increase to tenure itself.

       OBJECTIVE: To conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 50 years of publications in Skeletal Radiology to evaluate publication trends, citation impact, authorship patterns, institutional contributions, international collaboration, and research themes.
    METHODS: Data were retrieved from the Scopus database on 1 May 2026, covering all publications indexed in Skeletal Radiology from 1976 to 2025. A total of 8258 documents were analyzed using VOSviewer for network visualization (co-authorship and keyword co-occurrence) and Microsoft Excel for descriptive and statistical analyses. Key metrics included total publications (TP), total citations (TC), citations per paper (CPP), relative citation index (RCI), and total link strength (TLS).
    RESULTS: The journal demonstrated steady growth with an average of 168.5 papers per year and a 6.5% annual growth rate, peaking at 261.2 papers/year during 2016-2025. Scientific articles comprised 81.86% and reviews 10.01% of publications. The US led in productivity (4120 papers, 49.9%), followed by the UK (831) and Japan (464). However, Austria and the Netherlands recorded the highest citation impact. Prominent authors included D. Resnick (108 papers) and A. Saifuddin (175 papers). MRI, CT, osteoarthritis, and bone tumors emerged as dominant keywords. Highly cited papers focused on osteoarthritis imaging, meniscal pathology, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in fracture detection.
    CONCLUSION: Over five decades, Skeletal Radiology has established itself as a leading platform in musculoskeletal imaging, with increasing international collaboration and a clear shift toward advanced imaging technologies and AI. This analysis highlights key contributors, evolving research themes, and provides strategic insights for future directions in the field.

       OBJECTIVE: Research productivity among otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) residency applicants has increased substantially in recent years, alongside growing participation in dedicated research years. However, the extent to which a research year contributes to meaningful scholarly output remains unclear. This study characterizes and compares research productivity among OHNS residency applicants with and without a dedicated research year.
    METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed applicants to a single OHNS residency program during the 2025 application cycle. Applicants were categorized by completion of a dedicated research year. Students with ambiguous reasons for a gap in medical education (e.g., personal) were excluded. Research products listed in ERAS were categorized by type, authorship, publication status, and presentation characteristics. Outcomes were compared using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and reported as medians with interquartile ranges (IQR).
    RESULTS: The median number of total research products among all 196 applicants was 26 [IQR 17-37]. Applicants with a dedicated research year (n = 55) had more total research products than those without (n = 90) (32 [21-37] vs. 24 [15.75-37]), comprised primarily by unpublished work (5 [3-8] vs. 3 [1-5]) and oral presentations (6 [3-9] vs. 4 [2-7]). Published articles (5.5 [3-11] vs. 7 [3-12]) and first-author manuscripts (Median 1) did not differ significantly between groups.
    CONCLUSION: A dedicated research year is associated with modestly increased research productivity among OHNS applicants; however, this increase is largely driven by unpublished and middle author work. These findings suggest that volume-based metrics may incompletely capture scholarly engagement and may contribute to increased expectations without proportionate gains in research experience.

       PURPOSE: Null studies, in which the primary outcome is not statistically significant, are essential for unbiased evidence-based medicine and help reveal selective dissemination of research. We estimated the prevalence of null studies and characterized differences between null and positive studies in ophthalmology journals.
    DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of original studies published from January 1, 2014, through December 31, 2025.
    SUBJECTS: Original studies published in 90 PubMed-indexed journals listed in the Ophthalmology category of the 2025 Journal Citation Reports.
    METHODS: Study characteristics were derived using rule-based processing, except classification of the main study result as null versus positive, which used a large language model pipeline (gpt-4.1) applied to abstracts. Large language model performance was evaluated against a prespecified manual validation set of 500 abstracts, achieving kappa 0.87 (prespecified threshold 0.75).
    MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prevalence and differences in study characteristics between null and positive studies.
    RESULTS: A total of 93,963 studies were included, of which 19,231 (20.5%) were null studies. The proportion of null studies declined from 25.6% in 2014 to 15.1% in 2025 (p <0.001). Positive studies were more often funded than null studies (68.4% vs 58.0%; risk difference 95% CI 9.6 to 11.2; p<0.001) and were more often prospective in design (17.5% vs 16.0%; risk difference 95% CI 0.9 to 2.0; p<0.001), whereas randomized design was similarly common between groups (6.5% vs 6.5%, p=0.867). Positive studies were also more often drug-focused (13.6% vs 11.8%), device-focused (9.3% vs 6.9%), or surgery-focused (13.4% vs 9.3%) (all p<0.001). Null studies were published in journals with lower mean impact factor (2.59±1.62 vs 2.73±1.69; mean difference 95% CI 0.11 to 0.17; p<0.001), and worse mean journal rank (40.11 ± 22.6 vs 37.80 ± 22.2; mean difference 95% CI -2.67 to -1.95; p<0.001) compared to positive studies.
    CONCLUSIONS: In this large-scale analysis of ophthalmology journals, one in five studies had a null primary outcome. Overall, null studies became less common over time and were more often published in lower-impact, lower-ranked journals and were more likely to be unfunded. These findings suggest systematic differences in the characteristics and dissemination of null versus positive studies in ophthalmology.

       Objective: To assess long-term trends in the readability of ophthalmology abstracts and to determine whether a structural change occurred during the study period.
    Design: Bibliometric longitudinal analysis.
    Subjects: A total of 198, 201 unique English-language abstracts published between January 2000 and September 2025 in 67 PubMed-indexed ophthalmology journals.
    Methods: Abstract readability was quantified using the Flesch Reading Ease score. Temporal trends were analyzed using segmented regression with data-driven breakpoint selection. Secondary analyses included additional validated readability indices and linguistic features (including lexical density, lexical diversity, and clause density). Differences before and after the breakpoint were assessed using nonparametric tests.
    Main Outcome Measures: Changes in abstract readability over time, primarily measured by the Flesch Reading Ease score.
    Results: Readability improved gradually from 2000 until 2023, followed by a marked decline thereafter. Segmented regression identified a structural breakpoint in October 2023, after which readability declined sharply, with mean Flesch Reading Ease scores decreasing by -0.222 (95% confidence interval, -0.257 to -0.204) points per month compared with a prebreakpoint increase of +0.008 (95% confidence interval, 0.007‑0.010) points per month (P < 0.001). Readability differed significantly between the pre-October and post-October 2023 periods (median, 30.74 [interquartile range, 30.39-31.06] vs. 28.35 [interquartile range, 27.29-29.54]; P < 0.001). Similar patterns were observed across multiple readability indices. The decline was accompanied by increases in syllables per word, proportion of polysyllabic words, lexical density, lexical diversity, and clause density, whereas words per sentence continued to decrease over time. Findings were consistent across journal impact strata and remained evident in within-author analyses.
    Conclusions: In this large longitudinal study of ophthalmology abstracts, readability improved for more than 2 decades before reversing sharply in late 2023. The decline was associated with increased lexical complexity and with indicators of greater syntactic complexity and was observed across journals and author subgroups. Although the causes of this shift cannot be determined from the present data, the findings indicate a meaningful change in the linguistic characteristics of ophthalmology abstracts and underscore the importance of maintaining readability in scientific communication.

      Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, which accounts for one in sixth deaths. Given this substantial burden, funding agencies have invested heavily in cancer research over recent decades. However, the allocation of research funding does not always align with the burden of different cancers. This paper investigates the underfunding of research on female-dominated cancers in Europe and explores the mechanisms underlying the unequal distribution of research grants. Using a novel hand-collected dataset of 1078 projects funded by the European Commission between 2007 and 2023, we show that male-dominated cancers receive 3.7% more funding than female-dominated cancers, conditional on disease burden. This difference is driven by the over-representation of male researchers in cancer research and the higher proportion of male members on evaluation panels, which favors funding for male-dominated cancer projects. We find no evidence that the funding gap is explained by penalties against female researchers, gender differences in research outputs, or disease burden. These findings contribute to our understanding of how research funding is allocated across diseases and its implications for health equity. Achieving more equitable funding in cancer research requires targeted strategies, including incentivizing research on female-dominated cancers, supporting female researchers, and increasing gender diversity in evaluation panels.
