      Current animal protection laws require replacement of animal experiments with alternative methods, whenever such methods are suitable to reach the intended scientific objective. However, searching for alternative methods in the scientific literature is a time-consuming task that requires careful screening of an enormously large number of experimental biomedical publications. The identification of potentially relevant methods, e.g. organ or cell culture models, or computer simulations, can be supported with text mining tools specifically built for this purpose. Such tools are trained (or fine tuned) on relevant data sets labeled by human experts. We developed the GoldHamster corpus, composed of 1,600 PubMed (Medline) articles (titles and abstracts), in which we manually identified the used experimental model according to a set of eight labels, namely: "in vivo", "organs", "primary cells", "immortal cell lines", "invertebrates", "humans", "in silico" and "other" (models). We recruited 13 annotators with expertise in the biomedical domain and assigned each article to two individuals. Four additional rounds of annotation aimed at improving the quality of the annotations with disagreements in the first round. Furthermore, we conducted various machine learning experiments based on supervised learning to evaluate the corpus for our classification task. We obtained more than 7,000 document-level annotations for the above labels. After the first round of annotation, the inter-annotator agreement (kappa coefficient) varied among labels, and ranged from 0.42 (for "others") to 0.82 (for "invertebrates"), with an overall score of 0.62. All disagreements were resolved in the subsequent rounds of annotation. The best-performing machine learning experiment used the PubMedBERT pre-trained model with fine-tuning to our corpus, which gained an overall f-score of 0.83. We obtained a corpus with high agreement for all labels, and our evaluation demonstrated that our corpus is suitable for training reliable predictive models for automatic classification of biomedical literature according to the used experimental models. Our SMAFIRA - "Smart feature-based interactive" - search tool ( https://smafira.bf3r.de ) will employ this classifier for supporting the retrieval of alternative methods to animal experiments.        PURPOSE: This study investigated how trusting information on cancer varies by the source of information and political viewpoint.
    METHODS: This study used cross-sectional survey data from the 2020 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). The study comprised a sample of 2949 adults 18 years and older. The outcome variable was measured by assessing respondents' trust in cancer-related information from various sources, including religious organizations and leaders, government health agencies, charitable organizations, family or friends, and doctors. Political viewpoint was measured as liberal, moderate, and conservative. Multivariate linear probability models were estimated and adjusted for individual-level characteristics.
    RESULTS: Multivariate analysis found that conservatives (73%, 95% CI = 68-78%) were significantly less likely to trust information on cancer from government health agencies compared to liberals (84%, 95% CI = 80-88%). There was no statistically significant difference in trusting government health agencies between liberals and moderates (80%, 95% CI = 76-84%). Both moderates (27%, 95% CI = 21-34%) and conservatives (34%, 95% CI = 29-39%) were more likely to trust information on cancer from religious organizations and leaders compared to liberals (19%, 95% CI = 13-24%). The relationship between political viewpoint and trust of doctors, family or friends, and charitable organizations were not statistically significant.
    CONCLUSION: Compared to liberals, conservatives are more likely to trust information on cancer from religious organizations and leaders and less likely to trust government health agencies when adjusting for other covariates. This finding emphasizes the role of political viewpoint in shaping individuals' perceptions of information sources and cancer-related information.

      Drawing on Metzger's dual-processing model of credibility assessment, this study examines how individuals with varying topical knowledge (laypersons vs experts) assess the credibility of information on novel foods. Online focus group discussions reveal that both groups share similar motivations for assessing the credibility of information on novel foods (e.g. personal relevance and concerns about the impact of unverified information on others). However, they differ in the barriers they encounter during the assessment of information credibility. Both groups employ analytical (e.g. evaluating content quality) and intuitive methods (e.g. looking at source credibility) to assess the credibility of novel food-related information. However, they differ in the cues used for credibility assessment. Laypersons tend to rely on superficial heuristics (e.g. social endorsement cues or surface features), whereas experts rely more on content features and scientific knowledge to evaluate information credibility. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

       OBJECTIVE: DATASUS is the Brazilian Public Unified Health System (SUS) department responsible for providing health data that are used as a primary source of data in several studies on surgery and surgical specialties although its main limitations have not been previously reviewed. The objective of this work is to synthesize information from studies on surgery that used DATASUS systems as a data source and to identify the main gaps in this platform.
    METHODS: a scoping review was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR method to identify papers on surgery, and other surgical specialties, that used the DATASUS platform as a primary data source. No restrictions were imposed regarding the type of study or year of publication. Grounded Theory was used to analyze the content of the articles.
    RESULTS: 248 works were initially analyzed and 47 were included in the final analysis of this study. The original articles included were published between 2009 and 2022 and the majority (12.76%, n=6) were published in the Journal of the Brazilian College of Surgeons. Retrospective studies (40.43%, n=19) were the most common type of study found. Content analysis of the articles identified four predominant domains in the scientific literature about the limitations of using DATASUS in surgical research: lack of data, reliability, precision and data integration.
    CONCLUSION: the information systems available in DATASUS are the largest source of information about the SUS, but the scientific literature on the quality of data available in these systems remains scarce and studies aimed at measuring this metric are necessary.

       BACKGROUND: Patient education materials (PEMs) can be vital sources of information for the general population. However, despite American Medical Association (AMA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommendations to make PEMs easier to read for patients with low health literacy, they often do not adhere to these recommendations. The readability of online PEMs in the obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) field, in particular, has not been thoroughly investigated.
    OBJECTIVE: The study sampled online OB/GYN PEMs and aimed to examine (1) agreeability across traditional readability measures (TRMs), (2) adherence of online PEMs to AMA and NIH recommendations, and (3) whether the readability level of online PEMs varied by web-based source and medical topic. This study is not a scoping review, rather, it focused on scoring the readability of OB/GYN PEMs using the traditional measures to add empirical evidence to the literature.
    METHODS: A total of 1576 online OB/GYN PEMs were collected via 3 major search engines. In total 93 were excluded due to shorter content (less than 100 words), yielding 1483 PEMs for analysis. Each PEM was scored by 4 TRMs, including Flesch-Kincaid grade level, Gunning fog index, Simple Measure of Gobbledygook, and the Dale-Chall. The PEMs were categorized based on publication source and medical topic by 2 research team members. The readability scores of the categories were compared statistically.
    RESULTS: Results indicated that the 4 TRMs did not agree with each other, leading to the use of an averaged readability (composite) score for comparison. The composite scores across all online PEMs were not normally distributed and had a median at the 11th grade. Governmental PEMs were the easiest to read amongst source categorizations and PEMs about menstruation were the most difficult to read. However, the differences in the readability scores among the sources and the topics were small.
    CONCLUSIONS: This study found that online OB/GYN PEMs did not meet the AMA and NIH readability recommendations and would be difficult to read and comprehend for patients with low health literacy. Both findings connected well to the literature. This study highlights the need to improve the readability of OB/GYN PEMs to help patients make informed decisions. Research has been done to create more sophisticated readability measures for medical and health documents. Once validated, these tools need to be used by web-based content creators of health education materials.

       Background: The Internet has drastically changed how patients access health-related information. There are several ways the public can access online health-related information such as search engines, blogs, support groups, and webinars. A recent study found that 45% of orthopedic patients searched for information online regarding their injury. Also, 78% believed they had better understanding of their condition after visiting these websites; furthermore, 41% felt the Internet supplied them with questions and concerns to discuss with their physicians. The aim of our study is to evaluate the accuracy, quality, and readability of online available information using the search terms "ankle sprain" and "ankle instability."
    Methods: Three search engines (Google, Bing, and Yahoo) were used to search for the terms "ankle sprain" and "ankle instability." The first 25 websites from each search were collected. Each website was assessed for quality, accuracy, and readability by 3 orthopedic residents blinded to the search term used. Websites were also evaluated for commercial bias and whether written by physicians or not.
    Results: Twenty sites were identified using Google, 14 using Bing, and 3 using Yahoo while the remaining 19 appeared in multiple search engines. Sixty-nine percent of the websites (39/56) were written by physicians whereas only 21% (12/56) were associated with commercial bias. The mean quality and accuracy of the websites written above a seventh-grade level was statistically significantly higher than those at or below a seventh-grade level (P = .01). The mean accuracy of websites written by physicians was not statistically different from those not written by physicians (P = .055).
    Conclusion: The current study highlights the poor quality and accuracy of online information related to ankle sprains, especially those with commercial bias. Furthermore, although websites written by or under supervision of physicians were found to be of superior quality, a majority of sites were found to have an unacceptably high reading level.

       PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of systems or combinations of algorithms, which mimic human intelligence. ChatGPT is software with artificial intelligence which was recently developed by OpenAI. One of its potential uses could be to consult the information about pathologies and treatments. Our objective was to assess the quality of the information provided by AI like ChatGPT and establish if it is a secure source of information for patients.
    METHODS: Questions about bladder cancer, prostate cancer, renal cancer, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), and urinary stones were queried through ChatGPT 4.0. Two urologists analysed the responses provided by ChatGPT using DISCERN questionary and a brief instrument for evaluating the quality of informed consent documents.
    RESULTS: The overall information provided in all pathologies was well-balanced. In each pathology was explained its anatomical location, affected population and a description of the symptoms. It concluded with the established risk factors and possible treatment. All treatment answers had a moderate quality score with DISCERN (3 of 5 points). The answers about surgical options contain the recovery time, type of anaesthesia, and potential complications. After analysing all the responses related to each disease, all pathologies except BPH achieved a DISCERN score of 4.
    CONCLUSIONS: ChatGPT information should be used with caution since the chatbot does not disclose the sources of information and may contain bias even with simple questions related to the basics of urologic diseases.

       BACKGROUND/AIM: Evaluate the informative content in tooth avulsion videos intended for dentists available on YouTube™ and analyse their compliance with the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines 2020.
    MATERIALS AND METHODS: Google Trends was used to identify the most searched term for tooth avulsion. Tooth avulsion-related videos in Brazilian Portuguese intended for dentists were searched on YouTube™ with a 12-month filter. Two raters reviewed these videos to extract their features and evaluate and qualify them with two 9-point checklists based on the IADT 2020 guidelines. The emergency steps for tooth avulsion at the accident site were assessed before, during and after clinical management; each step received 1 point if present and 0 points if absent. The final score ranged from 0 to 9 points on each checklist (18 points total), and the total score was used to classify the videos as having poor, moderate or rich content. Reliability and video quality were evaluated by an adapted version of the DISCERN tool and global quality scale (GQS), respectively. The data were analysed with the Mann-Whitney U-test, Pearson chi-square test, and the Kappa statistic (p < .05).
    RESULTS: Of 60 videos, 8 were included. All were uploaded by dental professionals or undergraduate students; the average duration was 11 min (range: 0.40-65 min), and the average number of views was 56.75. Half the videos (50%) had maximum completeness scores for questions about emergency dentist referral before clinical management, and more than half (75%) had maximum completeness regarding the steps required during and after treatment. Rich videos had higher GQS scores (p = .049) without significant correlation.
    CONCLUSIONS: Although most videos in Brazilian Portuguese were considered high-quality according to the IADT checklist, half of them presented partial absence of information regarding orientations at the accident site.

       BACKGROUND AND AIM: Emerging literature suggests the role of social media in substance use disorders (SUD). This study aimed to explore the content of YouTube videos for persons on SUD treatment/recovery, describing the users' exposure and engagement metrics and understanding viewers' perspectives.
    METHODS: We generated a set of 10 key phrases to search on YouTube. Eighty eligible videos were analyzed using a mixed-methods approach. Content analysis of all videos and thematic analysis of 30 videos were done using the three most viewed videos from each key phrase. The reliability of videos was assessed using a modified DISCERN. The total number of views, likes, dislikes, and comments were noted and created engagement metrics. The linguistic analysis of viewers' comments was done to assess their perspectives.
    RESULTS: Sixty-three (78.8%) videos were from the US, and 59 (73.8%) were intended for persons or families with substance misuse. Persons in recovery uploaded 23 (28.7%) videos. We identified five themes - reasons for using drugs, symptoms of addiction, consequences of drug use, how to stop drug use, and expressed tone in the language. The positivity and relative positivity ratios were highest for videos developed by persons in recovery. There was a negative correlation between the relative positivity ratio and content fostering internalized stigma. Words with negative emotional experiences dominated the viewers' comments.
    CONCLUSION: YouTube content on SUD treatment and recovery is popular and revolves around the biopsychosocial understanding of addiction. There is an urgent need for a language policy and regulation of non-scientific content.

       BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to measure the quality of information about 'flatfoot' and 'pes planus' presented online on the social media site YouTube and to determine the trends of viewers to medical information on YouTube.
    METHODS: 'flatfoot and pes planus' was typed into the YouTube search module. From the search results, videos with 50000 views or more, longer than 45 seconds, containing information about flatfoot and pes planus disease were selected. DISCERN, JAMA scoring, daily average views, number of likes, number of comments were collected from 53 videos that met the criteria. The profession of the sharer was evaluated in terms of the information quality of the sharing and the orientation of the audience.
    RESULTS: The mean number of views per day of the examined videos was 2047. Mean video presentation time was 8 minutes 50 seconds. The mean JAMA score was 2/4 and the mean DISCERN score was 38.16/75. According to the DISCERN score according to the professions, the video quality was moderate in doctors (41.44±12.99), moderate in physiotherapists (41.91±9.04), poor in coaches (32.78±7.87), poor in patients (34.50±5.32) and weak in others (34.89±14.00). According to the Spearman correlation between DISCERN score and mean daily viewing significant relationships were found in the doctors group p:0.0102 and the others group p:0.0033, however, no significant relationships were observed in the physiotherapists group p:0.1073, the flatfoot patients group p:0.5363 and the coaches group p:0.9111. There were significant relationships between like and comment counts in all groups (doctors p:0.0088, coaches p:0.0069, physiotherapists p:0.0007, others p:0.0018, patients p:0.0066).
    CONCLUSIONS: Looking at previous studies, it was observed that the quality of online health information was historically inadequate. Likewise, in our study on YouTube, we found that the quality of flatfoot and pes planus information was poor to moderate.

      Objective  YouTube (YouTube LLC, San Bruno, California, United States), one of the most accessed sites on the internet, has become a widespread source of healthcare information for patients. Videos about coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) have accrued tens of millions of views on the platform, yet their educational quality is unknown. This study investigates the educational landscape of videos regarding CABG procedures on YouTube. Methods YouTube was queried for "Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery" and "Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Procedure". After applying exclusion criteria, 73 videos were assessed. Two independent reviewers rated the material with the Global Quality Scale (GQS) (5 = high quality, 0 = low quality) to judge educational value. A ratio of view count to days since upload was applied to assess video popularity. Source, modality, and date of upload were recorded for each video as well. Results An average GQS score of 2.94 was found, indicating poor educational quality of the 73 YouTube videos on CABG procedures. Videos uploaded by physicians (56/73; 76.7%) had a significantly higher average GQS score than those uploaded by non-physicians (p<0.001). When content was grouped by delivery method, physician-led presentations (24/73 or 32.9%) produced the highest average GQS score of 3.35; conversely, patient-friendly delivery methods (18/73 or 24.7%) yielded the lowest average GQS score of 2.36 (p<0.001). Neither the view ratio nor the days since upload significantly correlated with the educational quality of the video. Conclusion Although CABG videos are readily available on YouTube, they often contain considerable biases and misleading information. With online sources for healthcare education now commonplace, physicians must be aware of the vast quantities of low-quality videos patients often encounter when weighing different treatment options. Further analysis of CABG videos on YouTube may allow physicians to ameliorate this gap by producing videos that are not only high quality but highly viewed on the platform.

       INTRODUCTION: YouTube has become a main resource used by patients for self-education on medicine. It is important for surgeons to understand the quality and reliability of videos that patients are likely to view about elective procedures.
    METHODS: Videos were categorized by view count and content creators. The top 20 videos for each term, sorted by relevance, were evaluated using DISCERN criteria, a question set externally validated to assess the quality of information regarding health treatment choices. DISCERN score (DS) closer to 5 indicate higher quality information and 1 indicates the opposite. Total scores were given: 15-26 (very poor), 27-38 (poor), 39-50 (fair), 51-62 (very good), and 63-75 (excellent). Search terms included "Wound Care", "Skin Grafting", "Tracheostomy", and "percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement".
    RESULTS: In total, 80 unique videos were evaluated with a total view of 8,848,796. The mean overall DS was 2.15 and a mean bias DS was 2.46. The median DISCERN total score for each key term was Tracheostomy: 35 (poor), Skin Grafting 26 (very poor), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: 32 (poor), and Wound Care: 40 (fair).
    CONCLUSIONS: YouTube videos surrounding elective procedures should be viewed cautiously in patient education despite wide availability. The videos in this study show high levels of bias and low DS. Healthcare providers should be aware of poor-quality consumer health information often disseminated in online media such as YouTube.

       STUDY OBJECTIVE: There are many videos on contraception on YouTube and TikTok, and women around the world use video platforms extensively to seek health information from videos of uncertain reliability and quality. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the scientific reliability and quality of the most popular social media videos about contraceptive subdermal implants.
    METHODS: TikTok and YouTube videos were assessed separately by two gynaecologists. The video quality was evaluated according to the DISCERN score, Modified Discern Score, and Global Quality Score.
    RESULTS: The study included the 100 most popular videos, 44 of which were uploaded by healthcare professionals. The median DISCERN score for videos shared by healthcare professionals was 50 (range: 15-75), while it was 22 (range: 15-56) for videos shared by independent users (p 0.001). The median modified DISCERN score was 4 (min-max: 0-5) and the median GQS score was 4 (min-max: 1-5) for the videos uploaded by healthcare professionals. The modified DISCERN and GQS scores of TikTok videos are lower than those of YouTube videos (p 0.001 and p 0.001, respectively).
    CONCLUSION: Social media videos about contraceptive subdermal implants are popular and have been viewed tens of thousands of times, but the overall medical validity which we evaluated according to the scoring systems was poor. Despite the large number of videos, the content's quality and reliability are quite limited. There is a need to prioritize the education provided to patients by gynecologists, as well as to create high-quality content for YouTube and other similar platforms.

      Considering that individuals' health information can enable their adoption of health behaviors, we examined the use of health information sources related to COVID-19 and its association with preventive behaviors in a sample of older residents in Seoul, South Korea (N = 400, M age = 76.1 years). Latent profile analysis of 12 sources of health information representing conventional media, online sources, interpersonal networks, and health professionals or authorities yielded a 4-group typology: limited, moderate/traditional, moderate/digital, and diverse. In a multivariate model with the diverse group as a reference, the limited group (B = -4.48, SE = 1.14, p < .001) and the moderate/digital group (B = -2.73, SE = 0.76, p < .001) were associated with lower adherence to COVID-19 preventive behaviors. Our findings support the heterogeneity in the use of health information sources and the hypothesis that groups with restricted sources of health information would report less desirable behaviors. The findings also underscored the importance of proper use of digital health information. Efforts should be made not only to help older adults with low education access diverse sources of health information, including digital sources, but also to empower them to build digital and health literacy.

       OBJECTIVE: Providing appropriate health information to patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is advantageous in the treatment decision-making process. We aimed to investigate how online health information-seeking behaviors affect shared decision-making (SDM) in patients with SLE.
    METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 464 patients with SLE from five institutions. The main exposure was time spent on the internet per day, divided into four categories (none, <1 h, 1- < 2 h, ≥2 h). Participants categorized their preferred first source of health information as physicians, the internet, or other media. The outcome was the degree of SDM measured via the 9-item Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire (SDM-Q-9). A general linear model was applied.
    RESULTS: Compared to no internet use, longer internet use was associated with a higher SDM-Q-9 score: <1 h, 6.9 points (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.32 to 13.6) and ≥2 h, 8.75 points, (95% CI 0.61 to 16.9). The SDM-Q-9 did not differ between the individuals who chose physicians and those who chose the Internet as their preferred first source of health information (-2.1 points, 95% CI -6.7 to 2.6). Individuals who chose other media had significantly lower SDM-Q-9 scores than those who chose physicians (-7.6 points, 95% CI -13.2 to -1.9).
    CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggests that SDM between physicians and patients is positively associated with online information-seeking behavior, with no negative influence associated with accessing the Internet before clinical consultations. Rheumatologists may need to introduce their patients to websites offering high-quality health information to establish a good physician-patient relationship for SDM.

       Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in health information-seeking behavior (HISB) on the Internet.
    Objective: This review aims to identify and synthesize the available evidence on health information-seeking behavior on the Internet during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
    Methods: Electronic search of databases was conducted on PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Taylor and Francis Online to identify relevant articles. Studies that examined health information-seeking behavior on the Internet during or after the COVID-19 pandemic were included. Data from the included studies were subjected to a thematic analysis.
    Results: A total of 355 articles were identified in the initial database search. After screening, 15 articles were included in this review paper, with a population of 33,326. Search engines, social media, and news portals were the most commonly used information sources. The primary motivators for seeking health information online were curiosity, catching up with updated information, and paying attention to the COVID-19 transmission. Participants' satisfaction with the information obtained online was positive in most studies. The online query for all items related to COVID-19 and health increased during the pandemic. The most searched topics were symptoms of COVID-19, restrictions, current prevalence/spread of COVID-19, and preventive measures. Higher scores in digital health literacy (DHL) were associated with a well-established and effective health information-seeking behavior.
    Conclusion: The findings of this review provide insight into the patterns and trends of health information-seeking behavior on the Internet during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that search engines, social media, and news portals remain key sources of information during the pandemic. It also assessed the relationship between the DHL and the HISB and found that having a good DHL generally meant a good HISB.
